Sarcopenia is the degenerative loss of skeletal muscle mass (0.5–1% loss per year after the age of 50), quality, and strength associated with aging. Sarcopenia is a component of the frailty syndrome. It is often a component of cachexia.

The authors describe Sarcopenia as the ‘loss of function in the presence of loss of muscle mass. It has been demonstrated to predict functional decline, hospitalization, and mortality I both community dwelling older persons and residents in nursing homes.’
They go on to state that ‘Sarcopenia can be treated with resistance exercise, high whey (leucine) content balanced with essential amino acids and vitamin D. (1,000 IU a day).
