Elvis Rocks

A husband and wife team were in drills this week.

Both players have plus forehands, improving net games and backhands, and are junk yard dogs. (hustle like there’s no tomorrow)

When we began playing points, the missing link was immediately apparent.

Both possessed anemic serves which, on a 1-10 scale, were a 2.

One player had a pinpoint stance which had corrupted any racquet flow and velocity. The other had minimal body rotation and could be likened to a novice baseball pitcher whose left foot remained pointed at the catcher prohibiting any coiling used by all accomplished pitchers.

Back to the pinpoint stance. My understanding is that the desired result is increased leg drive where the player explodes up and into the serve. A force plate to measure thrust would have hardly registered with this serve…and, at the expense of an arm swing that could be built upon.

i borrowed a Jeff Lewis drill called The Elvis Presley.

The player stands with both feet facing their intended target.  With hands joined in a normal ready position, they turn to the right, turn to the left and on the next turn to the right…they toss and swing.
