A Little Voice

387 and counting.

Yes,sir.

That’s the number of times in the past fifty years that it’s happened.

A player on court, at a party, or in the club lobby has stopped me to say…”I heard you in my head in my match last week”…

or “I wish you were in my head for my match yesterday.”

I smile and tell them much of what comes from me to them is borrowed material.

Like ‘track it to the racquet’ from Brett Hobson.  He surely knows how many volleys have been mishit by looking at the target prior to contacting a volley. Heck, I still recall a routine forehand volley missed at City Park when my eyes forgot about the moment of truth.

Or, “be solid, not spectacular” How many players play as if they receive bonus points for treeing…playing out of their minds?

A final one sparked by the genius Welby Van Horn and adapted by a young cowboy…..”when I’m playing my best tennis, I have very few felonies.”  (net errors)

***. It’s reported that Maria Sharapova’s net clearance on year at The Australian Open was 31 inches and kudos to Vic Braden for putting a cord above the net to encourage better elevation and less felonies.
