For better or worse

Mary feared the worst when Doc’s memory continued to fade. She drove him to Dr. Bennett’s office for a battery of tests to determine what could be done. Two weeks later they returned to learn the results.

The look in the doctor’s eyes alarmed Mary as he welcomed them and asked the couple to have a seat.

‘Doc, I’m afraid the news is not good.

The tests you took revealed conclusively that you have Alzheimer’s disease.’

Mary shuddered inside as Doc attempted to absorb the verdict. Dr. Bennett said that quite a number of patients have tried a drug called Aricept and that worsening of symptoms can be delayed for six to twelve months. He encouraged Doc and Mary to consider the drug treatment and to let him know their decision.

Mary knew that there is no cure for the disease and that their lives would be changing dramatically very soon. She promised the doctor that she’d call by the end of the week as they left the office. Mary also made a silent vow on the ride home. She would honor their thirty-five years of marriage with a renewed commitment to make every day count…to create memories even as Doc’s memory eroded in the coming years.
