Tennis attraction

‘We play tennis, we’re told, to test ourselves, learn a skill and crush our opponents.

But as we age, the court can paradoxically feel like a refuge from the daily competitions of life. It’s where we leave the demands of work and home, and interact with people in an environment where there’s a little less at stake.

Yes, winning gives us a high.

But the moments that stay with me come not from the sport but from the people I play it with. Hearing about their kids, vacations and jobs. Commiserating about our injuries, shaking our heads over politics, marveling at Roger and Rafa and Venus.

Yelling out after a close loss, ‘I had you!’

Shaking hands at the end of a hit and saying ,’good run.’

Getting a beer together and forgetting about the match we just played.
