‘We play tennis, we’re told, to test ourselves, learn a skill and crush our opponents.
But as we age, the court can paradoxically feel like a refuge from the daily competitions of life. It’s where we leave the demands of work and home, and interact with people in an environment where there’s a little less at stake.
Yes, winning gives us a high.
But the moments that stay with me come not from the sport but from the people I play it with. Hearing about their kids, vacations and jobs. Commiserating about our injuries, shaking our heads over politics, marveling at Roger and Rafa and Venus.
Yelling out after a close loss, ‘I had you!’
Shaking hands at the end of a hit and saying ,’good run.’
Getting a beer together and forgetting about the match we just played.
