Emma

They seemed to begin in the fifth grade.  The cliques where kids were ostracized for reasons yet unknown.  I guess if you queried them the cool kids would cite one reason or another that they shunned her.  Maybe it was because she was more attractive……or smart…..or that the best looking boys were always walking her to class.

They didn’t realize that she was in pain.  They did not comprehend that she would cry after school wondering what she’d done. Her parents couldn’t get her to open up and tell them why she seemed so sad at times…..and so alone. One day, she had enough of it and decided that she would ignore the looks and the snide remarks.

Emma began volunteering at Children’s Hospital after school. Her smile returned and the compassionate soul her parents once knew began to shine again.   The experience at the hospital inspired Emma to attend nursing school with her eyes set on working full time at Children’s.

Sometimes it doesn’t work like this but there’s a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving at the Crawford house.  One can almost picture Emma……when asked what she’s most thankful for…….saying……’I’m thankful that I reached that decision point where I realized that there was nothing that would hold me back from becoming the best that I could be.

Thank you, God…. and thanks mom and dad for always being there for me.’
