Once upon a time there was cowboy who used to be very tall. Slowly, very slowly, he seemed to shrink a bit over time. Oh sure…..his wife and children looked up to him….but things were changing. Cowboy Bob now needed a small step ladder to mount his horse named Ranger. One day, he had just finished his duties on the ranch when he rode Ranger into town for dinner. It was there in the Salida Saloon that he ordered the largest steak in Colorado history. Yep…..this monster weighed 72 ounces and he hoped by feasting on it that he’d somehow forget that he was shrinking a bit more each year.
After dessert, he noticed an extremely tall cowboy entering the restaurant. This fella must have been like seven feet tall and he looked even taller with his very cool orange cowboy hat on. When he asked the waitress who this dude was…..she just responded…..”why everybody knows him, that’s Cowboy Cash McCoy…..and he’s got the fastest gun in the west.
Cowboy Bob asked the waitress if she could introduce him to this gigantic cowboy who also wore these amazingly cool orange cowboy boots. She brought the dude over and he towered over the table where the shrinking older dude was sitting. The two began talking and the conversation was incredible. Bob learned that Cowboy Cash was
a rodeo star who rode bulls that weighed over 1,000 pounds. He learned that Cash McCoy lived on a dude ranch in the mountains west of town with his parents, three brothers, and various pets. One of the pets was a twelve year old armadillo named Dusty. His other pets included a snake, a baby buffalo, and three roosters who would wake him at the craziest hour…..like 5:00 a.m.. Cash’s actual height was six foot seven inches and he said that he was growing about an inch every week. He also mentioned that his Grandpa Festus was seven foot four inches when he was younger but that he’s shrunk to four foot two inches over time.
Before Cowboy Bob got up to leave, the waitress came over and whispered into Cash McCoy’s ear and he followed her to a small stage that had a stuffed buffalo mounted on the wall. He picked up a rustic looking guitar and began singing as the restaurant became as still as a mouse. It seems the tallest cowboy in Colorado was hoping to become the next American Idol. His voice and guitar playing drew a standing ovation from the crowd. He looked at Cowboy Bob who was the only one to remain in his seat.
Later he learned that the older dude didn’t stand much anymore because everyone knew he’d soon be no taller than Grandpa Festus. Small enough to ride the baby shetland pony at Aunt Martha’s…..small enough that he’d soon need a step ladder to mount even that tiny horse.
