Points to Ponder for Tennis 2016

Every day that includes tennis is a blessing.

Technical innovation is transforming the game….maybe it’s time to demo a racquet.

Brett Hobden’s advice never goes out of style….’Track it to the racquet.’ The ball is only in contact with your strings for four to seven one thousandths of a second. Be like Federer and stay visually on contact for three one thousandths longer than anyone on your court.

In doubles, it’s tough to win from the baseline….but easy to lose from the backcourt.

You can never be criticized for hitting up the middle in doubles.

When you’re forced to play a half volley at the service line…..bump it….don’t bash it.

Wear a wrist band….after an error, say ‘no sweat’ as you wipe your forehead.

Type a note and carry it in your bag….’When I’m playing my best tennis, I have very few felonies.’ (Net errors)

When you volley well it’s….’no drama mama!’

DNO. Defense Neutral Offense Offensive tennis wins but getting from defense to neutral is a close second. It’s a tool in every wise player’s toolkit.

Playing fewer than four Australian serving points per match is a mistake. Take away that crosscourt return and set up your forehand or forehand volley from the add court. (Righties)

You tube the Bryan Brothers Doubles before you play….their energy is infectious.

Check out The Art of Doubles by Pat Blaskower from the library.

Take Dave Romberg’s advice. Use your initials to your advantage. Be solid for 3 shots without going for anything risky. If you can make it to the fourth shot of every point you will be tough to beat. Dave was the head pro at Cherry Hills CC for 29 years and now lives in Thailand.

Play one lob return of serve in the first game….all overheads are iffy until proven otherwise.

If all else fails, pull the blinds in your living room.

Google Play That Song by Train and turn up the volume as it plays on You Tube. Who knows, you might end up dancing your cares away and realize that it’s just a game.
