My uncle, John T. Cody, was a business owner and terrific Western artist who lived in Kansas City.
He once told a story about my father, Bill Hall, that came back to me today.
Bill attended Paseo High School in Kansas City where he was a standout in basketball and football. Mr. Cody said he was a fierce competitor in an era when there were no face masks in football and high school basketball games were often 18-12.
One Saturday afternoon in 1935, the quarterback handed the ball to halfback Bill who raced around right end and galloped 80 yards for a touchdown. The only problem was the yellow flag that signaled offensive holding and a ten yard penalty.
The coach huddled with the quarterback and sent him back on the field with instructions. Wouldn’t you know it…they ran the same play and the fleet footed Bill scampered ninety yards to pay dirt.
Maybe in heaven they have a video of this as that’s quite a feat I’d love to see.
