Neal

He’s alone every day
walking slowly with a cane
near the quiet waters of the
South Platte River

I wonder if his visit to the tennis club
lifts his spirits
and helps him later
when the sun fades and the table’s set for one….

When he’s by himself and four walls
stare coldly back at him

He arrives around three o’clock to watch
retired men and women play doubles
before they return to husbands and wives
and holiday parties with friends

I close my eyes and pray that this gentle soul
is not alone at Christmas
No, he will not be alone this year

God wants us to come together
and treat him to lunch….
To present him with gifts
that will show people still care

We’ll wrap a fleece blanket in colorful paper….

with the hope that it will warm his heart and remind this retired dentist

that life is good and that the world is not as cold

as the four walls he used to dread

when he was all alone.
