Fishing follies

By Mike Hall, March 3, 2022

A once much younger man was trying to describe the experience of fly fishing The Deckers area of The South Platte River these days.

After two outings and 12 hours this week of going without any tugs, the closest I can get is that it’s about as much fun as a game of solitaire.

The only bright spot was a chat with a fella who’s moving back to Colorado after forty years in Pennsylvania.  He was really impressed with the river and mentioned that they don’t have streams like this where he’s from.  I told him that since the pandemic, the crowds are similar to your favorite amusement park on the 4th. of July.

I said to disregard the famous guide’s words that there are 9,500 fish per mile here because if you catch two, it’s the equivalent of winning the lottery.

My wife has again been authorized to hit me upside the head with my old Louisville Slugger bat should I mention another trip to Deckers. That tactic, although extremely painful, worked like a charm two years ago and I became quite accomplished at solitaire.
