Experts believed that a sub four minute mile was beyond the reach of the human body. That notion was shattered in 1954. Sure, people had come close but no cigar. Roger Bannister altered his training regimen and confounded the skeptics by running 3 minutes fifty-nine point four to make history. Soon, the four minute mile was being broken regularly. The current record for men is 3:43 and 4:12 for women.
