Come with me, little one
We will walk together in the shade of the mighty oak trees
that tower above the path where mulberries grow
and lightning bugs light up the night
If you listen closely, you will hear the soothing sound
of the crystal clear water in the brook nearby
We will sit there in silence while the noise
in your head slowly surrenders
In time, the critical voice that hounds you
will be whisked away as bluebirds and butterflies sail overhead
Eventually, when you are ready, I will speak words
of healing and hope that were, for so long,
never spoken to you
I will explain that there is no reset button that will magically undue
the disillusionment and sadness that has dogged you these many decades
Forever lost is the chance to have her look at you with the shining eyes
that would have caused your spirit to fly
There will be a moment when the sadness seems to envelop you again
but you will not linger there anymore
No, for I am your caretaker now…… commissioned to love you in the
profound way that will heal the heart that was punctured at three
and nearly crushed at ten
Together, we will form a bond that is divinely inspired
One that will call forth the unique part of you that
the world longs to see……the part that walks a new path
that snakes along a river flowing with invigorating water
taking the sadness and merging it with the sea
Your soul will be enthralled by the roaring sound
and our feet will seem to glide through the forest
We will skip together for the last quarter mile
and stop at the edge of a towering cliff
There we will see the seagulls cavorting in the breeze….
unshackled by limiting beliefs or negative self talk
As the river empties its load into the yawning ocean,
We will feel the cool mist on our faces and realize
that a miracle has taken place
Finally, a repository for the ache, and the longing, and
the hurt that nearly suffocated your soul
This metaphor of the river and the sea will live with you forever
And I, as your caretaker and forever friend, will walk with you
often to this hallowed cliff to remind you that life can be renewed….
that spirit can be reawakened….. and that life is good.
