If only

By Mike Hall, June 27, 2016

I’d see you in the lunchroom
sitting by yourself
and think there must be some reason
you chose to sit alone

I was too busy
laughing and clowning
to see the despair
written on your face

I could have befriended you
could have eased your pain
if only I had taken time
time to care

Now I see the folly
of all this busyness and fun
you’re no longer with us
your life just came undone

We’re left to wonder
why you couldn’t cope
I wish we could have joined together
to give a ray of hope

No one will ever know
the you you might have been
the hearts you could have touched
if only your pain could have been swept away

I want you to know
that your life mattered
that your suffering was not in vian
because of you
we’ve  changed
our hearts have opened

I vow to be that friend….
who makes time for the lonely
and never has to say if only….
again
