Richard Gasquet is the number 10 ranked tennis player in the world. He is The defending champion of the Montpellier tournament in France. Today, he faced Dustin Brown who is ranked #133. Gasquet broke his racquet at O – 2 in the second set after losing the first set 1-6 in twenty-six minutes. At the thirty-five minute mark he was down three games to love in the second. Brown had hit 22 scintillating winners in just over a half hour. The French crowd was abuzz. It was like watching Michael Jordan go one on one with a high school player. In one game, Brown ripped three consecutive return winners followed quickly by a backhand bullet game winner down the line.
Gasquet evened the second set at three all and eventually won it 6-4. He clearly had engineered what former Clemson coach Chuck Kriese called a ‘mo switch.’ Brown’s spectacular play was diffused and Gasquet went on the win the third set 6-3.
The lesson….next time you play someone who is in the zone and can’t miss, just hang around and be solid. They may lose their mojo and you’ll turn the tide like the Frenchman who appeared to have no shot in the first set.
