Plan to Win

Seven Ways to Win More Doubles Matches
1. Choose a partner that you jell with.
Come together after each point to erase the last one
and create a positive expectancy about the next one.
2. Be wise in the backcourt and ravenous at net. Poach when you are ahead.
3. Take coach Leslie Allen’s advice and ‘hit and commit. ‘Another way to consider this is play one bounce only when receiving…..move in and volley after the return.
4. If you’re making less than eighty per cent of first serves or double faulting too frequently, have your partner hold the second ball so you don’t have a mulligan mentality when hitting the first serve. Serena only steps to the line with one ball.
5. Know how the word penultimate is applied to tennis. It means next to the last and helps players use discretion in the application of power.
6. Respect the five priorities of all shots. Consistency, directional control, depth, spin
and power.
7. Be solid rather than spectacular on service returns. When your opponents compliment you after the match for ‘hardly missing a return,’ you know you’re making progress.
