My great friend of 65 years Tom Finholm related some sad news to me over dinner Thursday evening.
Terry English, the legendary basketball coach from Bishop Miege high school in Kansas City, passed away recently from a stroke. My thoughts and prayers to his family and the hundreds of girls he coached and inspired over a forty -five year career at the school. What a dynasty he developed…22 state titles and one state title in baseball. His career record was 910 wins and 168 losses. Terry was also named National Coach of The Year for his excellence.
I had the pleasure of playing with Terry when we were freshmen at Miege. He helped lead the team to a 16-1 record and even got called up to play varsity that year. He was a silky smooth left handed guard and reminded us of the UCLA Star Gail Goodrich. Terry went on to play for Rockhurst College in Kansas City before beginning his amazing journey as a coach.
I know his family is comforted in knowing the invaluable positive impact he had on every player who played on Miege teams.
Rest in peace, sir…you were the real deal both as a player and coach!
