A two year old boy wearing a red GAP shirt was busy climbing
the dozen stone steps near the sanctuary at St. Thomas More church.
His father followed him closely as a tumble would have meant a 911 call.
The youngster reached the top without incident and a very young
spectator felt a sense of relief. The boy hurried to a nearby table
where a basket of a hundred crayons beckoned him. He reached up
and grabbed the basket and I could imagine countless crayons on the floor
and an angry dad. Instead, the father quickly grabbed the basket in mid flight
and the suddenness startled the toddler. He began to cry and thought his
father’s quick save might land him in time out. The dad gently put his hand
on the boy’s head and said something that calmed him down. He then lowered the
basket so the boy could pick his favorite crayon or two. The father in the blue shirt
modeled two words that the little fella needed……Love and Patience.
May that response become the norm as junior grows and tests the dad
who scored an A+ today.
