A very young cowboy posing as a fisherman trekked to Deckers yesterday in search of wild brown trout.
Unfortunately, the rains last week had left the river swollen with the look of mama’s morning coffee.
Casting larger streamers that resemble baitfish is usually a good plan under these conditions. I was rewarded with a beautiful 13 incher who attacked the purple streamer like Mike Tyson going after a petrified opponent. Unlike Tyson, this character jumped three times in quick succession before being netted.
Things were slow most of the day but two hours later a larger fish nailed the imitation and took off downstream like Usain Bolt in the 100 meter dash. I let him run and then applied some pressure to draw the 17 incher upstream.
Keeping the rod low in hopes of quieting this fish was working splendidly and then poof…the line went slack and Houdini the escape artist was gone.
I gave this gamer all due credit and hope that perhaps we’ll meet again.
Yes indeed…Houdini lives!
