My first tennis job began at The Jewish Community Center in Denver on Leetsdale Boulevard.
Abe Polanski was my boss and we got along great and took a number of fly fishing trips together to The Eagle River near Vail.
He told great stories and loved to play the harmonica in the car.
We had a Memorial Day tennis event that year and were in need of a large bowl to hold the lemonade. Feeling resourceful, I jogged up to the kitchen in the main building and found, what looked to be, the perfect silver bowl.
Abe and his boss Ken Light wanted to speak with me an hour later in the tennis shop.
”Mike…you just made a mistake that will not happen again. The silver lemonade bowl is kosher and is only to be used for significant Jewish holidays and surely not to be handled by non Jewish rookie tennis coaches.”
Oooops!
