Forty cars were parked near Linksview Park this morning and another soccer Saturday began. As we teed off on number one at South Suburban, the soccer kids were flying around the field and coaches were feverishly shouting instructions that…..truth be told, the kids never heard. I had a flashback to nearly thirty years ago. Our neighbor was watching his six year old son play in his first year of soccer. The dad noticed that Danny was not racing around the field like the other players….never mixing it up or trying to move to the ball. A timeout was called and the father approached the boy. ‘Danny, he said, is there something wrong…..you’re not hustling like the other boys.’ Danny looked at his father and said, ‘Dad, if I run around like them, I’ll sweat.’
Writing this, another recollection from last winter. Bill Hanzlik was being interviewed after a poor showing at home by The Denver Nuggets. When asked about the energy and effort of the Nuggets, Hanzlik was brutally honest. ‘Here’s how bad it was tonight…….Ty Lawson and Kenneth Faried probably don’t even need to shower tonight.’ It’s no wonder that Coach Brian Shaw and Lawson are no longer employed by the team.
