It Depends

By Mike Hall, May 28, 2017

It was a gorgeous day last Thursday on The South Platte River in Eleven Mile Canyon west of Colorado Springs.

A young man with high hopes arrived early and tried not to be too concerned about the ‘watch out for bears’ sign at the registration shack.

The hopes were realized when three feisty brown trout were fooled by 9:00 a.m..

Going fishing each week has allowed me to refine my packing routine to where rarely is anything forgotten. Lunch cooler filled…extra clothes in case of dunking…sunscreen…and three rods rigged in advance for nymphs, dry flys, and streamers. To say that the car is packed would be an understatement.

At 9:30, after scrambling downstream to retrieve my favorite straw that had blown off into the rapids, the morning changed dramatically.

In an instant, the canyon was filled by the deafening sound of a fighter jet zooming overhead. It felt like the pilot was pranking the unsuspecting fishermen like me who believed World War III had just begun.

So now, my packing will include one more item.

My wife says that Walgreen’s has the best discount on Depends in the metro area.

She balked at getting them for me so a trip to Arvada has now been put on the schedule.
