It was a hot day in June of 2000 and perfect for swimming at the beach. Not the ocean mind you….but the terrific beach at the lake in Bow Mar, Colorado. A very young tennis pro had a full day of lessons at the courts about a half mile from the beach. Our daughter, Carly, and her best friend Jessica, packed a lunch and grabbed a couple of fishing poles in hopes of catching a sunfish or two. My cell phone rang at 2:30 p.m. and the excited voice on the line was Carly. ‘Dad, you won’t believe this, I caught a fish.’ ‘Was it a sunfish…..or a bass,’ I asked. ‘Dad……we were fishing from the dock with corn as bait when I hooked a sunfish. As I reeled it in near the dock, a huge northern pike swallowed the sunfish and we netted it. Wait till you see it!’ Sure enough……when I arrived around 4:00 p.m., Carly proudly showed me her monster northern which was twenty-seven inches long. Pretty exciting stuff for an eleven year old novice.
