God Bless America

On a crystal clear Tuesday morning fifteen years ago, we collectively trembled as the events unfolded. Like JFK’s assassination, all remember where they were that fateful day when the television showed evil on steroids. Today, we reflect and honor those who perished…we pray for them and their families and friends. We honor the first responders and their families and friends. Surely, their pain on this anniversary remains raw and unresolved. We were forever changed as a nation that day. The country pulled together as in the aftermath of December 7th, 1941. In New York today, the men’s final will be played at The US Open site. I will watch because the tennis promises to be outstanding. But more than that, I’ll watch because the opening tribute to the lost and the heroes of 9/11 will be moving…will rekindle the hope that we can still remain the greatest hope the world has to conquer evil.
The highlight won’t be some blistering backhand down the line or leaping overhead to win a set. The moment I’ll treasure will be when all 23,000 fans…and players, stand united as our national anthem is sung. Here’s hoping that those few minutes will bring a bit of comfort to the ones whose grief we all share today. May God Bless America now and forevermore.
