He was a kind and good hearted man. Bus Bergman was a coach, mentor and decorated war hero from World War 2.
I was reading Buzz Bizzinger’s excellent book entitled The Mosquito Bowl, when he mentioned our renowned and totally unassuming baseball coach at Mesa Junior College. I’ll encourage you to read this incredible book and just lay out for you here what I’ve learned this week about Coach Bus Bergman.
He starred in baseball, football, and basketball at North High School in Denver. Bus hit a buzzer beater shot to propel Denver North to the State Championship in 1938 and was also All State in football.
Moving on to Colorado A&M, he earned an unheard of 10 varsity letters in the three sports above. By the way, he never said one word about his heroics in WW II or his athletic accomplishments to teams he coached through the years. Oh, and lest I forget, he was the class president at Colorado A & M.
Coach Bergman has been inducted into five Hall of Fame organizations including The Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.
There’s much to learn from this hero of a man…just wish he was still here and we could engage in a fireside chat.
