Answered prayer

Ten years ago, a much younger cowboy was pressed for time on a quick lunch break between tennis lessons.

I inadvertently took a bite of a banana, and in my haste instantly realized it was much too large to swallow. Seconds later, a sense of panic overwhelmed me as it was impossible to breathe.  Remembering the universal sign for choking, I put my hans to my throat and luckily spotted Doug M. who just happened to be on-site doing some maintenance work.

He recognized the terror in my eyes and quickly started performing abdominal Heimlich thrusts. Fortunately, the banana came out on the fourth thrust and a wave of relief enveloped me.

Thank God Doug was there when he was as he was only on-site maybe two days a month.

Paramedics who arrived soon after said that bananas, because they are somewhat soft, usually don’t exit the windpipe via The Heimlich.

All I know is that angel Doug might just have saved my life that fateful day.
