Alone

By Mike Hall, March 28, 2017

Lucas doesn’t know anything different. The arguing…the yelling, it’s not normal but seems to be an everyday occurrence at his house. He internalizes emotions that would be too difficult to feel.

Being an only child, there’s really no one to talk to…no one to listen even if he could open up. Lucas believes his stepdad loathes him.

The constant criticism leveled at the youngster has undone his self image. He escapes frequently and spends time alone…way too much time alone.

Sitting by himself, Lucas wonders about the dads and sons playing catch after school. He sees kids on bikes racing by laughing and oblivious to the sadness that envelops him like a blanket.

Is there a Lucas in your world?
