The Broncos were fighting hard to hold the Colts to a field goal late in the game yesterday. Maybe you were watching them trying for their eighth straight victory of the year. It looked as if they would force the field goal and regain possession of the ball. There was a chance that they could mount a drive and score a game winning touchdown. That was an optimistic scenario because they have so many gifted players at the skill positions. Unfortunately, one of their defensive millionaires is lacking in basic common sense. A scuffle broke out and he decided to rush to the scene and plunge two fingers into the right eye of an opponent. Such a smart move……you saw it, didn’t you? Well, that wise decision cost the Broncos any chance to come back and win. Most of you didn’t see the post game interview with defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. It showed his disdain for this moronic behavior and his unique way of making sure it never happens again. When asked about the consequences for the player, Wade said he’d be fined $150,000.00 and, here is the best part……the player would not accompany the team back to Denver on their chartered flight. No sir…….the offending misfit was presented with a Schwinn bicycle and would need to pedal it back to The Mile High City. A reporter said that a snowstorm is moving across the plains. ‘Aren’t you concerned that he’ll get caught in conditions unsuitable for biking?’ ‘Not at all’, Phillips responded, ‘this is intended to build character, and…..as anyone could see……it was sorely missing today. I mean c’mon, how foolish can you get to let down the entire team with such a punk like move? We’ve given him gloves and extra socks and he’s suspended for next game anyway.’ Ya gotta love old Wade…..somewhere in heaven his dad, Bum Phillips, is smiling. Phillips was also asked if Coach Kubiak supported his decision. ‘Absolutely, Gary’s behind me100% on this.’ As he told me after the decision was announced, ‘it’s only 1,085 miles…..it will give this guy plenty of time to think and introspection has not exactly been his strong suit.’ Somewhere in heaven, Bum Phillips, Wade’s father and mentor. is smiling at The Wit and Wisdom of Wade.
