Today will be another beautiful day in Colorado before the colder weather arrives later this week. A very young tennis pro awoke this morning with the memory of a similar day in the fall of 2010. It was a Tuesday morning and he was rushing to finish lunch before a noon group lesson. A couple of players had stopped by to ask questions about lessons and leagues. Time to finish lunch had slipped to two minutes. The youngster took a bite of a banana and soon realized his mistake. The bite was much too large and the banana became lodged in his throat. To say that PANIC set in would be an understatement. The inability to breathe is a feeling that sets off internal alarms that are not soon forgotten. I rose quickly with eyes the size of basketballs and looked for someone who might help. Luckily, Doug Mufka was walking by and saw me with my hands to my throat and a look of extreme distress on my face. He performed the Heimlich maneuver on me just as I thought I would pass out. On the fourth thrust, the banana was dislodged and it took me a few minutes to realize how fortunate I was. I thanked Doug and vowed to take plenty of time for all subsequent lunches…..no more large banana bites by this lucky man. So, this morning at 5:15 when I recalled this story, a song by Joshua Radin came to mind. A Beautiful Day has happy go lucky lyrics that makes you want to sing along.. Thanks again, Doug, for helping me see another beautify day in Colorado.
