The View of The Educated Tennis Parent

By Mike Hall, October 17, 2026

I reckon most tennis professionals have used three balls across in their classes.

At Randy Ross Tennis Center, we have a balcony where parents can view their kids.

I submit that it’s worth imagining that the parent upstairs is a 5.0 former college player…you know…one

who has a discriminating eye for technique.

What if…

  1.  The coach or best player did a couple of swings with balance on the eye coach or a tossed ball?
  2.  The sequence of feed was diagonal towards the coach in the alley near the net.
  3.  The first ball is a standard feed…the second is low at the T for underspin…the last is 8 feet from the pro       and balance must he held for “1000 and 1”. Say ‘YESi’ if on balance and a pro look.
  4. The player touches the net post and does a ladder or side shuffles to end of line.
  5. The waiting players are always moving and no California Casual look.

Imagine what the parent would think upstairs.

One could go visit thirty clubs that don’t use these ideas and see educated parents frowning

and questioning their investment in a cavalier approach to their kids improvement.

Steven Covey wrote that ‘people should begin with the end in mind.”

How about starting with the image of a delighted parent who plays at a high level?
