Horatio Spafford was a successful Chicago businessman whose story is a remarkable testament to faith and perseverance.
In 1871, he and his wife Anna lost their four year old son to scarlet fever.
In 1872, the Chicago fire devastated his business.
In 1873, the couple planned a trip to Europe with their four daughters.
Last minute important business came up and Spafford had to attend to it telling the family that he’d meet them very soon.
On November 22, the ship carrying Anna and the girls collided with another vessel and sunk in a matter of minutes. Anna survived but all of the daughters perished at sea.
Mr. Spafford left immediately to comfort Anna and the ship’s captain notified him when they reached the spot of the tragic collision.
He immediately felt moved to sit and write the words to ‘It is well with my soul.’
I’ve heard this classic song by various artists for years but hearing this interpretation, I imagined the spirit of this man as he penned these famous words.
