We decided to get creative today in an advanced beginner tennis class featuring Diego, Carlos, and Revanth.
On the next court, two 10 and under girls were playing a tournament match and they were very good players.
Parents and relatives were viewing the match from the viewing area above and were clapping and giving verbal encouragement after many of the points.
I suggested to Diego that he might try the Carlos Alcarez gesture of holding his hand up to his ear after especially good points.
He thought it was an excellent idea and…on the first point, he hit a nasty side spin ace in the deuce court. Up with the Alcarez imitation and sure enough the spectators let him hear their appreciation.
Soon, Carlos got into the act and received louder applause for a big time forehand winner.
It was only after the lesson that I learned that this gesture to ‘hear the love’ began with Hulk Hogan.
