I wonder if the seventy something fella ever sits in his easy chair at night with a wry, well earned smile. Do the memories of middle of the night alarm clocks and weekends on call all seem worth it now?
Most men at this stage of the journey reflect on children raised and grandkids cherished and yes, he relishes every minute with them all.
This gentleman hopefully relaxed in that chair this past Wednesday with a smile from ear to ear.
You see, he was stopped outside the theatre by a woman with silver hair and sparkling eyes. It was clear she is a huge fan of this now retired doctor.
As she turned to leave, the woman pointed to two tall young men standing nearby. I think her words were…’you know, Dr. Jim, you should be extremely proud…it was over twenty years ago that you delivered these two remarkable boys.’
I glanced at the good physician who smiled back and seemed to take it in stride…like that’s just what doctors do.
Yes, that’s what they do…bring the miracle of life to fruition while converting husband – wife teams into magic makers, moms and dads.
One wonders if the fine doctor knows how many families he’s touched and the millions of memories they’ve been fortunate to create because of him.
